Matthias Maier | Stories | Week 18 2025 | Purple flowers on a summer day

A few days of summer

Suddenly they were here: days with a sky as deep and blue as you rarely get to see. The perfect introduction to the month of May.

The last remnants of the clouds that still covered the sky on Monday dissipated from Tuesday and the days that followed were more summer than spring. How everything changes, how everything feels different. Just getting up when I push aside the curtains and the color gradient of the dawn hints at a clear day. Or the scent in the air when I step out onto the balcony shortly afterwards. At this time of day, before the city wakes up and the morning traffic begins, this air, which smells of meadows and hay, reaches the city center and reminds me of times in the past when I was able to spend my days surrounded by this scent. The air and the sunlight transform people into somewhat happier beings. They increasingly walk through the streets with a smile on their faces. That is infectious. As much as I like the wilderness and the green lushness of the growing plants, the whole thing looks much more inviting when it’s a bit tidier.

Just a teaser

But for a moment I was also a little disappointed, this sudden feeling of “summer is here!” also meant that spring, the anticipation, all this newness every week, had come to an end. However, the summer rush was over as quickly as it had arrived. At the weekend it got cooler and wetter again. Saturday morning I was woken up by heavy rain and had to unpack the rucksack I had packed the night before for a planned hike. Until another time…
