Just ordinary life

There are weeks where not much happens and they are quickly told. And they also happen in such exciting places as New York or Fire Island. This week is one of those.

I started the week with a last morning on the island, got up early, took a walk on the beach while the sun was rising on it. Then I packed my things, took the ferry, the shuttle bus and the train and in no time I was back in the other reality. Big city life.

Growing your dream

From the train, a beautiful scene caught my eye. Somewhere in Jamaica, which is already very densely and urbanly populated after all, there had been an old house with a large garden in the backyard that went almost to the railroad tracks. The garden was a perfectly laid out vegetable garden, growing pole beans, zucchini, tomatoes and all sorts of other vegetables. In the middle of it all was an elderly man standing, who must have owned the garden and was in the process of watering it. It was such a peaceful and green oasis in all the gray and stone. A symbol of the dream that can be realized, no matter where, if you believe in it and work hard for it. And it made me happy to see that in this big city, where you can buy everything, there are people like this who still follow their passion and grow their own vegetables. It’s like making art: not absolutely necessary, but it feels very good. Too bad I saw this garden too late, it would have made a beautiful photo. Maybe I’ll be able to take it on one of the next train rides.

Ordinary New York City life on ordinary days

New York City summer life

The time in the city was mainly characterized by working. I am still busy with various projects and the optimization of the website. I actually also wanted to do some things, something touristy or go shopping. But in the end it was always too hot and humid.  So my outdoor activities remained quite manageable. Jogging in the morning, a trip to Grand Central Station to buy soap and a few evenings out. Nothing exciting, just normal life.

Enough is enough

On Saturday, however, I had enough of living behind closed blinds and continuously humming air conditioners that blow cold air at you. We drove back to Fire Island in the evening and had a somewhat spectacular crossing on the ferry. A violent thunderstorm with strong winds and rain showers unloaded. Nevertheless, we arrived in one piece and reasonably dry. The next morning was very clear and the sky seemed to be bright and clean. A perfect start for the probably last week here at the beach this summer.
