Sick in paradise
After all the summer months in Basel, the time finally came again this week for relaxing days at the beach. Despite a cold, I enjoyed every single one of them.
It always feels like coming home when I’m back in New York after a few months. I look forward to seeing everything that makes up life here again. The neighbors, the streets, the restaurants. The smell of the air, a mixture of sea air, food smells and bleach, infused with cannabis smoke. And then the energy of the people, the diversity, all races, all genders, all body types. And all respectfully side by side. The liberating feeling of simply being able to be who and how you are here is simply good.
A day in the city
I started the new week with a morning run in Riverside Park. Nothing helps me overcome jet lag more than going jogging in the morning. After an afternoon in the Meatpacking District to buy new running shoes, I noticed a scratchy throat, which intensified in the evening during a meal with friends in a restaurant.
Feeling sick
The next day we took the train and ferry to Cherry Grove on Fire Island. That’s another feeling of coming home. It is now the third year in a row that we have rented a small house there. The perfect contrast to the big city and simply a paradise. No car noise, no ambulances, just the sound of the ocean and the cicadas at night. Unfortunately, the scratchy throat intensified into a sore throat and I also got a proper cold. I spent the first few days mainly indoors, apart from a few short walks on the beach. I used the time to prepare various adjustments to my website. Working in a vacation home on the beach has a certain lightness to it, despite the constant runny nose.
Anyway…
So in the end, despite being ill, I had experienced a bit of everything that makes the island so special. The ocean, sometimes wild and foaming, sometimes calm and smooth. An impressive sunrise. The seagulls, the sandpipers and the deers grazing in the dunes early in the morning.
