The best at first

Sometimes you have to ignore the rules you normally use to structure your existence in order to bring a breath of fresh air into your everyday life.

I once read in a book, “What if the best is yet to come?”. I resolved to remember this as one (of many) guiding principles for my life. There were times in my life when I thought I had passed my peak at 35 and then it was all downhill. I laugh about that today and have to say that, in my case, what came after far outweighed what came before. And I don’t really like to internalize the attitude that everything was better in the past and everything will get worse ahead of us. That makes it a lot more difficult to move on in a positive way.

Overcoming the mindset trap

What I also had to overcome was the mindset I was brought up with of saving the best for last. The duties first and then the pleasures. First the work, then the play. It certainly makes sense to analyze all the tasks that are constantly pending and to prioritize those that are really important to achieve your goals.

But in between, you can also be a little unreasonable and turn to the more enjoyable things first if you feel like it.

Cruising on Lake Lucerne

A short escape

Why these thoughts came to my mind was the fact that I started this week with a highlight. Due to a visit from my friends, I took Monday off and we went on a lovely trip to Lucerne. It made me realize again what a special country I live in here. So many different worlds in such a small space. After an hour’s drive, we were surrounded by mountains and crystal-clear water and glided across Lake Lucerne in a boat for a few hours. The ever-changing backdrop of green hills, snow-capped Alpine peaks and towns passing by helped us to switch off and feel like we were on vacation. An hour’s vacation… A walk through the alleys of Lucerne’s old town rounded off this perfect day.

The city of Lucerne

Back to the usual

The rest of the week was then lost in everyday life again. Nevertheless, it didn’t go unnoticed that so much was going on outside these days, so many trees were turning green, not only in the city, like the lime tree outside my kitchen window, but also the Jura hills in the distance were suddenly covered in a green fluff that grew stronger every day. The return of summer is unstoppable.
