An interlude in Basel

Between New York and Ticino, I spent a few rather unspectacular but work-filled days at home in Basel.

The new week began somewhere over the North Atlantic. Due to the different time zones we crossed, I can’t even say exactly when. At some point, I opened the airplane window shade and dawn was breaking, just a few hours after the sun had set in New York. I always find the night flight back to Europe exciting, even though I usually can’t sleep for more than a few hours. As a morning person, I think the dawn of a new day above the clouds is something very special and beautiful. Watching the colors change, the sky slowly turning blue and the first clouds below us red. This time, I noticed something I had never noticed before. The Earth’s shadow becomes visible on the horizon as the sun rises, and the higher the sun climbs, the flatter it gets. I had simply never noticed it before and was delighted to have discovered something new and to have witnessed the simple beauty of it all.

Switching homes

After three hot weeks in New York, arriving in rainy and cooler Switzerland felt a little strange, and everything seemed so different, so new, so clean. The power of travel. A few hours earlier, I had been feeling nostalgic about leaving my apartment and familiar surroundings in New York, but now I was looking forward to arriving at my Basel home, taking a shower, and getting two extra hours of sleep in my own bed. After taking Monday off to settle in, the following days were filled with all sorts of appointments and everyday tasks that are not worth mentioning.

Studio update

I continued working on the idea for woven pictures, thought about it some more, and created another one. This work features a herringbone pattern, a weave that I personally like very much. The nice thing about something new is that as you work on it, you get more and more ideas that are worth formulating and implementing to find out if they are any good.

On the road again

However, I didn’t have much time left to implement these ideas. On Friday, it was time to pack my suitcase again for another week away from Basel. Early on Saturday morning, I went to the train station, and three hours later, after a journey across Switzerland, I found myself under palm trees in Ticino. In Orselina, above Locarno and in the immediate vicinity of Madonna del Sasso, I am now looking forward to a few days of dolce vita.
