With art against the gray

The first autumnal week was an attunement to the coming months and if it hadn’t been for the art, it would have been totally lost in the gray.

The week began with rain. I like the rain when I lie in my bed under the roof and listen to it dripping on the tin cladding of the attic. And on the leaves of the plants on my balcony outside the window. The scent of wet earth that wafts into the room as I stretch out under the warm blanket. I like the sound of the drops on the large skylight, through which the world in front of it ripples and undulates and everything appears to be in soft motion. I love drinking my coffee for breakfast and looking out into the gray, wet world while I make myself a peanut butter and jam sandwich and eat it with relish.

Impressions of gray days

A rainy and cold week

And then the moment comes when I should go out for a run. I then find this weather not quite so nice anymore. Especially when the rain is joined by the cold. The first cold after a long, warm summer. You know it, the cold, and you kind of look forward to it when the seasons change, when you’ve had enough of the sun and the heat. But when you feel it for the first time, it’s kind of a shock. For me at least. Nevertheless, I didn’t let it get me down and went out. It was the only thing I could do. The rain stayed all Monday, it came on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. And the low temperatures remained there as well. It wasn’t until Saturday that the sun made a brief appearance. Nevertheless, what I remember most about this week is the gray, the wet and the cool.

Rescuing splashes of color

But not completely. Between all the commitments and sport, I was finally able to devote myself to art again this week. My art. And so, in the midst of the gray weather, I created a new painting that allowed me to forget the dull grayness and indulge in warm green and memories of summer in the mountains. “Val dal Botsch” is the first picture in a new series of mountain pictures I am currently working on. If all goes well, I will be exhibiting some of them at an exhibition at the beginning of December – more about this will follow shortly.

Cloth maneuvers in Basel

And finally, there was Bignik by St.Gallen action artists Frank and Patrik Riklin, which took place on Sunday. 24,000 square meters of picnic cloth covered Münsterplatz and the adjacent streets of Basel’s old town. Another colorful art highlight that definitely brought a positive end to the dreary weather of the week.
