Five voices – one exhibition

My artistic year came to an end with a group exhibition in my previous studio collective.

In my life, the right things often happen at the right time. That’s not just luck, it’s an attitude. Anyone who opens themselves up positively to the universe will sooner or later have this experience. Sometimes affirmations help to become aware of the right attitude again. By chance, I stumbled across an Instagram post by Sam Wysock-Wright this week that was about such affirmations. Sentences like these, when internalized as convictions, work wonders!

Attracting Opportunities

Such an experience happened when I decided to get involved with art (something I had actually wanted to do my whole life, but always put off for other things) and started talking about it with my friends and coworkers. Through a colleague, I happened to find a place in a studio community in my neighborhood at the time. The great thing about a community, especially for a beginner, is that you get to meet people who already have experience. Even though everyone practiced a different kind of art, the exchange was inspiring and many questions were answered. Another advantage of a group is exhibitions. On the one hand, I became involved in the organization and learned how to do it. On the other hand, we always brought together very different people who visited our exhibitions and bought art. This allowed me to build up a customer base that I still benefit from today when I hold my solo exhibitions. This has always been the case since I moved into my own studio after I moved home to another part of the city. When a friend from this former studio community asked me a few weeks ago if I would like to participate in a group exhibition with them again, I was immediately enthusiastic. It meant a little extra work so close to my departure for New York, but when opportunities like this arise, it would be a shame to ignore them.

Getting ready and go!

The week was then mainly dominated by this exhibition, which we called Five Voices – One Exhibition. Making the final selection of artworks and hanging plans. Packing the pictures, creating and printing price tags and price lists. Renting a car and transporting everything to the venue, and do the hanging of all the paintings. Organizing food and drinks, cleaning the space, and then: opening night! The exhibition ran from Friday to Sunday, and I was very happy that almost the entire time, there was someone there who was interested in my work. In addition to a few paintings sold, the conversations at each exhibition are invaluable. Getting feedback on your work, understanding how others perceive it in very different ways, and thus re-examining your own work in a whole new light. This always gets my mind racing and inspires me to create new work.

All the little wonders

The week was also the first week of December. The year is definitely drawing to a close. Photographically, it was peppered with very different scenes that became part of my life. There were gray and cold days, sunshine, planes flying into a rainbow, petrified dogs, and grazing geese. Urban suburban landscapes in Zurich and beautiful details in the architecture of old townhouses in Basel. Blooming winter flowers on the balcony and the beauty of leaf structures in the morning sun in the living room. And someone summed up Christmas in an urban minimalist way on a lamppost.
