Island Life

An entire week on Fire Island. Days that glide along carefree, like the ocean waves on the beach. And the rest of the world so far away. Switching off once more before the end of what could have stayed like this for a while longer.

Spectacles in the sky

It was a week full of emotions and moving moments between the sky, the water and the sand that has spread all the way to the bed sheets. Monday was the first full moon of this August (a second one will follow at the end of the month). It was fascinating to see how it rose big and blood red out of the Atlantic, became brighter and poured its light over the dark water to later sink into a cloud that seemed to be the only one in the sky waiting for it. While I was already sitting on the beach waiting for the spectacle, a light appeared in the sky that looked like a comet, bright, with a short tail. It passed across the sky and then disappeared behind the solitary cloud. I was a bit confused at first and couldn’t figure it out. Later I googled about it and found out that it was an Antares rocket that had taken off from Virginia to fly to the ISS. I never dreamed I would get to see something like that.

The pleasure of the morning lark

I love the early morning hours at the beach. Being outside when the morning dawns. Experiencing how the light and colors come back, so intense in the first minutes, as if to make up for the absence during the night. The deserted beach. The two of us running naked in the warm ocean, drifting in the calm waves of the morning ebb. Touching, holding, laughing…salty kisses.

The return of the daylight

A little later, putting on the jogging shoes and going for a run. Out of town and into the endless dunes with their very special maritime vegetation. Through the Sunken Forest with the trees bizarrely shaped by the wind. Enjoying the shade before heading back under the sun. Stretching, outdoor shower, coffee, toast, peanut butter and jelly.

Time for work and time for pleasure

I then devoted a few hours each day to work. Firstly, on working out new pictures, and secondly, incorporating more photos of past years from my old website into the journal. A somewhat tedious and time consuming process, but I got November, October and September of 2020 done. The beauty of this work is the long forgotten moments that come back to mind through the photos.

There’s nothing more beautiful than the way the ocean refuses to stop kissing the shoreline, no matter how many times it’s sent away.

Midday naps – what a luxury. Then lying on the beach with a book, enjoying the wind and the warm sun on my bare skin and in between the salty water and the waves. I like to stay on the beach until the anyway few people have gone and the sun is already low. Then going back up to our tiny house, having another shower in the open air and putting on something more than just my bathing suit. Going out to eat and then having a drink or a party and dancing, drinking, more laughing and kissing.

Gratefulness

Ah, the lightheartedness of island life. The simple, uncomplicated, carefree that makes so happy. I want to take everything I have experienced deep inside me to be able to draw from it when the days are getting dark and cold again soon. And I feel blessed and rich, because I was allowed to experience all this once again.
