In between

A week in Basel between the time spent in the Swiss mountains and the big city, characterized by lots of tasks, preparations and very hot summer days.

I allowed myself a day off at the beginning of the week. The hiking week in the mountains with its many beautiful impressions was still very much present on Monday. And the start of the new week began with pleasant temperatures that allowed me to go for a jog in the late morning.

Hot summer again

From then on, everything changed. Summer returned with a vengeance, although the light had already changed noticeably and the colors in nature were turning more and more into brown. However, the temperatures showed none of the melancholy inherent in these days. The sun burned mercilessly during the day at over 30°C / 85°F in the shade and the nights were characterized by the hum of the fan, which blew a light and cooling stream of air over my naked body from the sideboard as even a light blanket was already too much.

A walk in the sunshine

Although this climate called for a siesta, it was out of question. My upcoming time in New York needed all my attention and I had a long list of preparations to work through every day. On Thursday, I allowed myself a short break after the somewhat exhausting visit to my father and took a walk over the hill near Lörrach, where the Wiesental valley merges with the Rhine plain. The wild flowering anise caught my attention, I just love these umbellifers and the taste of aniseed anyway. The blazing sun on the parched meadows soon put an end to this excursion, but it was still good to enjoy the summery nature once again, which will be history when I return from the USA.

The rest of the week was made up of errands, appointments and meetings with friends, all of which took place in Basel and were preferably done early in the morning or after sunset, when the temperatures were more bearable. So the week passed by incredibly quickly.

Time to escape

Sunday was then all about the trip to New York. Before sunrise, we made our way to the airport in Basel, from where we flew to Frankfurt and from there on to New York. Once again, I enjoyed watching the world from above. And the dark blue at the height of 35000 feet, that reminds me of my cyanotype works. The peaceful power that emanates from this color. In contrast, the white of the clouds – just water and air and yet so versatile.

A new beginning

The flight, during which everything that was so important in Europe is left behind, and then the arrival in America like a new beginning and with the joy of a few weeks with a different perspective on life and work.
